Creating A Character

There are two broad ways creatures are categorized; major or minor, and sapient or nonsapient. Player characters are always major sapient creatures, and the creation of such characters is described here. For the creation of minor and nonsapient creatures, see Making Monsters.

  1. Devise a broad character concept, and discuss with the GM and the group the game's parameters, such as setting and starting Tier.
  2. Select a Kind and, if necessary, a Lineage.
  3. Select Professions, beginning with a number equal to your Tier + 1.
  4. Add up free skills, specialties, and stat bonuses from your Professions and other choices thus far.
  5. Spend starting XP (36 per Tier) by buying skills, specialties, and maybe even languages.
  6. Calculate derived stats, creating your Health Track, Stamina and Willpower totals, your Kit, and your Attributes.
  7. Finalize your equipment, picking and choosing your free Profession gear and selecting any additional items the group agrees are reasonable (usually with a base Value of your Tier or lower). Don't forget the Soak and Stamina modifiers from your armor, and a bag of coin or two!
  8. If needed, select your spells or prepare a quick shortlist of go-to spells.
  9. Try to describe some central Beliefs and any other biographical or cosmetic character details, but don't sweat it too much. Characters are made in play!
